The first wildlife warning system in the canton of Zug is being installed in Oberägeri. The aim is to warn drivers on the Ratenstrasse about wild animals.

The system is intended to alert drivers in Oberägeri to the presence of wild animals in the vicinity of the road at an early stage. According to a press release from the Canton of Zug Department of Home Affairs, there are four to five fatal wildlife accidents per year on the stretch of road between Wyssenbach and Gutsch. The Amt für Amt und Wild also assumes a high number of unreported cases.

The warning system works with sensors on the road posts. As soon as an animal approaches the sensors and is detected, the lights begin to flash and draw the driver's attention to the animal, according to the press release.

The FDP of the canton of Zug initiated the introduction of such a system a few years ago with a postulate. The cantonal party demanded that the responsible office for forests and game should evaluate wild animal accidents and take measures.

According to the press release, the warning system is to be tested for three years. If it proves successful, it should be introduced on other stretches of road in the canton.

Warning systems for wild animals are already in operation in other cantons. These include in the cantons of Schwyz, Bern and Zurich.
