US President-elect Donald Trump has commented on the death toll in New Orleans. "Our hearts go out to all the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department," the Republican wrote on his online platform Truth Social about the incident that left at least ten people dead.

Trump uses message for political statements

"When I said that the criminals coming into our country were significantly worse than the criminals we have in the country, my statement was constantly dismissed by Democrats and by the Fake News media, but it turned out to be true," Trump continued, hinting at a possible foreign origin of the perpetrator, which has not been confirmed by investigators.

"Crime numbers in our country are at a level that no one has ever seen," Trump wrote. His statement contradicts the statistics: According to them, crime rates have dropped significantly in recent years.

In a popular nightlife district in the US southern metropolis of New Orleans, a man drove a car into a crowd of people early on New Year's morning. At least ten people were killed and more than 35 others were injured.
