The environmental protection group Sungai Watch spoke of the worst wave of washed-up plastic waste on Bali to date. "Never before has the plastic been a meter high on the sand," said Sungai Watch founder Gary Bencheghib. Within six days, a record 25 tons of waste had been collected, more than ever before on the island.
Indonesia is one of the biggest producers of plastic waste in the world. The annual monsoon rains wash mountains of waste from the cities and rivers into the sea. This is then carried hundreds of kilometers by the current. Between November and March in particular, heaps of waste wash up on Bali's coast.
