According to the Guinness Book of World Records, she was the oldest person in the world: the Japanese woman Tomiko Itooka has died at the age of 116, as reported by the Japanese public television station NHK, citing the city administration of her home town of Ashiya in Hyogo Prefecture. According to NHK, Itooka was born on May 23, 1908 in Osaka as the eldest of three siblings and moved to Ashiya around 30 years ago. "During her long life, she gave us much courage and hope. We thank her once again and offer our sincere condolences to her family and loved ones," the TV station quoted the city's mayor as saying.

Japan's society is ageing rapidly. As of September last year, the nation had a record number of more than 95,100 people aged 100 or over. This was the 54th consecutive year that the number of centenarians has risen.
