The Zurich derby series tilts early in favor of the favorite. The ZSC Lions also won the second game in Kloten 5-0.

No goals were scored for 39 minutes of the game. But then Derek Grant put the ZSC Lions ahead 54 seconds before the second intermission. And in the 45th minute, Mikko Lehtonen increased the lead to 2:0, after which the Kloten team fell apart. The ZSC Lions' foreign forwards scored four of the five goals. And the ZSC Lions are dominating the playoffs as they did a year ago. Back then, the team from Zurich reached the playoff final unbeaten against Biel and Zug.

The 1:0 put the game on the right track for the ZSC Lions. First, the referees did not recognize Grant's goal. Kloten's Harrison Schreiber appeared to have saved on the line. However, when studying the video images, the referees saw that the puck had crossed the line.

Until this first goal in the 40th minute, Kloten had been hoping for a surprise. The game began evenly balanced, but the longer it went on, the better Zurich SC got to grips with it. Kloten's best chance to turn the game around came in the 14th minute from Canadian Jayce Hawryluk. However, he failed to beat goalie Simon Hrubec. The Czech made 25 saves to secure a shutout. Last season, Hrubec recorded five shutouts on his way to winning the title in the playoffs.
