Norway celebrates a triple victory after Marco Odermatt's retirement at the World Cup opener in Sölden. Steen Olsen wins the giant slalom ahead of Kristoffersen, McGrath and returnee Braathen (4th). The best Swiss is Gino Caviezel in ninth place. Marcel Hirscher finishes in 23rd place.

Alexander Steen Olsen wins the first World Cup race of the alpine skiing season. The 23-year-old Norwegian wins the giant slalom in Sölden ahead of his compatriots Henrik Kristoffersen and Atle Lie McGrath.

Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, newly racing for Brazil, finished a strong fourth on his comeback with bib number 41, while the neo-Dutchman Marcel Hirscher came 23rd after 5051 days away from the World Cup.

The best Swiss in a race characterized by sensational comebacks was Gino Caviezel in ninth place. Marco Odermatt was eliminated in the first run and Loïc Meillard had to withdraw due to back problems.
