Germany wins a highly dramatic quarter-final against European champions France 35:34 after extra time, bringing a glittering career to an end for Nikola Karabatic.

The French were six goals ahead at one stage. Shortly before the end of regulation time, it looked like the hosts would win. There were six seconds left on the match clock and the French were in possession of the ball when disaster struck for the European champions. Dika Mem, who had played an outstanding game up to that point, lost the ball completely unnecessarily, allowing the Germans to equalize with the final buzzer.

Germany came out on top in extra time in front of 27,000 spectators in Lille. While the DHB team will face Spain on Friday, one of the greatest careers in handball ends with France's elimination. Nikola Karabatic ends his career with the Olympic Games. The 40-year-old won three Olympic gold medals, became world and European champion four times and won the Champions League three times.
