Our best player becomes a tragic figure These are the Nati grades for the penalty drama against England

Bitter! Our European Championship dream ends in a penalty shoot-out against England. Chief defender Akanji becomes a tragic figure. Yet he was one of the best in the 120 minutes beforehand. Here are the Nati grades.

Grade:  5.0

Goal

Yann Sommer

He has no chance with Saka's 1:1 shot into the far corner in the 80th minute. Before that he didn't have to hold a ball. Top save after Rice hammer. It is Sommer's first ever save at this European Championship. Not the slightest chance in any of England's penalties.

Grade:  4.5

Defense

Fabian Schär

Solid in defense, three or four beautiful long diagonal passes. Picks up a yellow early on against Bellingham. The longer the game goes on, the less concentrated he becomes. Lucky once or twice not to get a yellow card.

Grade:  5.5

Defense

Manuel Akanji

Has Kane totally under control, the Bayern star doesn't see a ball. One single misplaced pass in the build-up, negligible. Apart from that? A strong performance from the defensive boss. Becomes a tragic figure in the penalty shoot-out.

Grade:  5.0

Defense

Ricardo Rodriguez

Goes forward more often than ever before, crosses more often than ever before at this tournament. At the back - as usual - a safe bet. Here he's in the right place, there he's making the right tackle. Brutally composed.

Grade:  5.0

Midfield

Dan Ndoye

Started off with a Ndoye tempo dribble when he left Trippier standing. After that, he doesn't make much of an impact going forward, mostly occupied with defensive work. Then set up Embolo's 1:0 in the 75th minute.

Grade:  5.0

Midfield

Remo Freuler

No easy task against Mainoo, but solves it brilliantly. Unlucky to get caught in the English defense with his heel trick. Freuler is the Duracell bunny of the Nati, always on the move.

Grade:  5.5

Midfield

Granit Xhaka

Stomps away a Saka pass shortly before the break. And otherwise? (Almost) always playable, usually confident on the ball and incredibly calm and composed. Xhaka also dominates the game in his 65th game (!) this season. And all this with torn muscle fibers in his adductors, as Xhaka admitted after the game.

Note:  3.5

Midfield

Michel Aebischer

Struggled with the speedy Saka in the first half. Lucky there was no penalty when he pushed him away. Improved after the break, but still let himself be fooled by Saka at 1-1.

Note:  4.0

Sturm

Fabian Rieder

Has to play more defensively than in the round of 16 against Italy. Closes many holes, tough in duels, but has few actions himself. Inconspicuous. Had to make way for Zuber in the 64th minute.

Note:  5.0

Striker

Breel Embolo

Struggled to receive the ball at the start. Rubbed up against the English defense tower Stones. But his tireless efforts paid off, scoring with the tip of his foot in the 75th minute to make it 1-0. Takes off after 110 minutes.

Note:  4.0

Sturm

Ruben Vargas

The celebrated match-winner against Italy is unable to make much of an impact. Replaced by Widmer at half-time. Like Rieder on the other side, an unremarkable performance.

Substitutes

Note:  4.5

Silvan Widmer

Came on for Vargas in the 64th minute. Fits in well in the side. Gets the card again in game one after serving his yellow card. Still has a chance to bring the game home in the 119th minute.

Note:

Xherdan Shaqiri

Comes on for Embolo in the 110th minute. Too short for a rating.

Note:

Vincent Sierro

Comes on for Freuler in the 119th minute. Too short for a rating.

Grade:

Denis Zakaria

Comes on for Ndoye in the 98th minute. Too short for a rating.

Grade:  5.0

Steven Zuber

Comes on in the 64th minute for Rieder. Has played very few minutes at this European Championship so far, but you wouldn't know it. Zuber plays cheekily and confidently, wants the ball.

Note:

Zeki Amdouni

Came on for Aebischer in the 119th minute. Too short for a rating.
