The 36-year-old assistant coach of the Hungarian national team collapsed on the touchline in the early stages of the Nations League match in Amsterdam against the Netherlands (0:4) on Saturday evening. Hungarian media reported that Szalai had to be resuscitated.
Hungary next German opponent
The national association said during the first half that Szalai was in a stable condition and had been taken to a hospital in Amsterdam for examination. The game in the Johan Cruijff Arena was restarted after just over twelve minutes following the emergency. The Hungarians will be Germany's opponents and hosts next Tuesday.
"I hope he gets back on his feet now. Then we'll see if we can play a good game and hopefully Adam will be back," said Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann after the DFB team's 7-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina. At the time, Szalai himself had not yet reported for duty. "First of all, I hope he's doing well. He's an ex-player of mine with whom I have a very good relationship," said Nagelsmann.
276 Bundesliga games for four clubs
Szalai, who played 276 Bundesliga games for Mainz, Hoffenheim, Schalke and Hannover, played for Hungary himself until two years ago, most recently as captain. In February 2022, he moved from Mainz to FC Basel. There he was booted out a year later, accompanied by background noise. It was his last stop as a professional footballer.
He officially ended his active playing career in the summer of 2023. It wasn't until the first leg against the Netherlands in October that he made his first appearance as assistant coach of the Hungarian national team.
