A medical emergency overshadows the football match between the Netherlands and Hungary. The injured Hungarian team member is the former Basel professional Adam Szalai.
There was a medical emergency in the early stages of the Nations League match between the Netherlands and Hungary. After a few minutes, the Hungarian assistant coach collapsed on the touchline. The football match in the Johan Cruijff Arena was immediately interrupted and paramedics rushed to the team's coaching zone. Hungarian television subsequently confirmed that the casualty was former Basel professional Adam Szalai. The attacker played for FCB from February 2022 to January 2023. The association has since reported that the 36-year-old is being treated in an Amsterdam hospital. His condition is stable and Szalai is conscious.
When the paramedics brought Szalai into the stadium after just over twelve minutes, applause broke out. The game was restarted shortly afterwards with a penalty for the Dutch after video evidence. Wout Weghorst scored to make it 1-0, but the celebrations were muted in view of the previous circumstances.
