- Novak Djokovic reaches the semi-finals at Wimbledon for the 13th time, equaling Roger Federer's record.
- He wins the quarter-final without a fight as Alex de Minaur has to declare a forfeit.
- If Djokovic wins the tournament for the 8th time, he will equal Wimbledon record winner Roger Federer.
Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic is through to the semi-finals at Wimbledon without a fight. The 37-year-old record Grand Slam winner does not have to play his quarter-final against Alex de Minaur because the Australian withdrew from the important grass Grand Slam tournament due to a hip injury.
"This is obviously not an announcement I wanted to make. I'm devastated," said the world number nine. He had suffered the injury at the end of the round of 16 match against Frenchman Arthur Fils, said the 25-year-old a few hours before he was due to play Djokovic.
De Minaur reported that he would probably be out for three to six weeks and would risk a much longer break if he played another match. A start at the Olympic Games in Paris, which begin at the end of July, is therefore very unlikely for de Minaur.
Djokovic aims for eighth Wimbledon title
Djokovic thus reaches his 13th Wimbledon semi-final and equals a record set by the Swiss Roger Federer. With another and then eighth triumph at the grass-court classic in south-west London, the Serb could also equal Federer in the number of Wimbledon tournament victories.
In the semi-final on Friday, Djokovic will face the winner of the quarter-final between the American Taylor Fritz and the Italian Lorenzo Musetti. In the other semi-final, the Spanish defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and the former US Open winner Daniil Medvedev from Russia will face each other.
Doubts had surrounded Djokovic at the start of the tournament. Just a month ago, the winner of 24 Grand Slam tournaments had knee surgery after injuring himself at the French Open. He is now two wins away from his 25th Grand Slam title.
