In the US west coast state of California, hundreds of firefighters are battling a rapidly spreading forest fire. Thousands of people have already been told to get to safety, according to US media reports.

The so-called Line Fire broke out on Thursday in San Bernardino County. The district borders Los Angeles County. It is now burning uncontrollably over an area equivalent to around 80 square kilometers, as reported by the Calfire fire protection authority.

Three people have already been injured. The authority did not initially provide exact details. According to US media, the injured are firefighters. According to official figures, the flames are threatening more than 35,000 buildings, including homes and businesses.

At the weekend, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for the affected region. In this way, money and aid can be made available more quickly.

It was not initially known what caused the fire. A total of over 1,800 helpers are working to extinguish the fire. The fire is being fought from the ground and from the air. Schools in the region are to remain closed on Monday, and several roads have also been closed. Air traffic was also partially disrupted over the weekend, reported the Los Angeles Times.

According to US media reports, the region has been extremely hot over the past few days. There is little hope of showers in the coming hours. It is also currently burning in other parts of California. In view of climate change, experts are warning that fires are becoming more frequent and more destructive.
