Trump announced in a written statement that Karoline Leavitt, who was previously a spokesperson for his election campaign, would take on the role. Leavitt had already worked in the press office of the US government headquarters at the end of Trump's first term (2017 to 2021). She is "smart", "tough" and has proven to be an extremely effective communicator, the 78-year-old explained. According to US media, Leavitt will be the youngest person ever to hold this high-profile job.
Anyone who speaks officially for the White House is usually very present as the face of the government and gives daily press conferences at the government headquarters. However, this was different during Trump's first term in office. At times, there were no White House press briefings at all. A spokeswoman at the time, Stephanie Grisham, left the post after several months without having given a single press briefing. Instead, Trump often gave long press conferences himself or took questions from reporters. At the same time, he denigrated the media then and now as "enemies of the people".
In his first four years in office, Trump had a total of four spokespeople: Sean Spicer, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Stephanie Grisham and finally Kayleigh McEnany.
