At least 40 farmers and fishermen are said to have been killed in an attack by Islamists in north-eastern Nigeria.

Fighters from the terrorist militia Boko Haram or its offshoot Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP) are probably behind the attack, according to the Information Commissioner of Borno, Usman Tar. According to him, the attack took place near the community of Dumba in Borno state.

"According to initial reports, about 40 farmers were killed," Tar said. He added that the search was still on for people who had fled the attack. According to initial investigations, the victims are said to have left the security zone set up by the government and the military and moved to areas that had not yet been cleared of insurgents and landmines.

The militias Boko Haram and ISWAP have been violently fighting for the introduction of Sharia law in parts of Nigeria for over a decade. The conflict has so far displaced more than two million people and killed around 350,000 in Africa's most populous country.
