According to forecasts, the Republicans have maintained their majority in the House of Representatives in the US congressional elections. This assessment is based on voter surveys and initial vote counts, as reported by NBC and CNN. However, the AP news agency has not yet issued a final result.
With this majority in the House of Representatives and control already secured in the Senate, where the Democrats previously only had a narrow majority, President-elect Donald Trump has a solid power base. This will enable him to push through key legislation from January without major resistance from the Democrats. It could also speed up the confirmation of government officials and judges, making it easier to implement his political agenda. Critics fear that this could encourage authoritarian tendencies in Trump's next term in office.
Influence of the "Project 2025"
The Heritage Foundation's "Project 2025" could play a role in this context. This handbook, which outlines radical changes for a conservative presidency, could serve as a template for comprehensive social and economic upheaval. It contains instructions for strengthening control over federal agencies and filling key positions with political loyalists.
Although Trump officially maintains distance from this document, there are numerous overlaps with his policy goals. These include tax cuts, mass deportations and the dismantling of the previous government's reforms, particularly in the area of climate protection. Restricting reproductive rights could also be on the agenda, although Trump has expressed contradictory views on a nationwide ban on abortion.
Simultaneous elections
The elections for the composition of the House of Representatives took place at the same time as the presidential election and the Senate elections. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives were up for election, while 34 of the 100 seats in the Senate were up for vote.
