The German Embassy in Bangkok has issued a warning to potential visitors to the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan. This monthly event attracts many tourists to Haad Rin Beach. Reports of possible terrorist attacks that could specifically target Israeli citizens have prompted the embassy to urge caution.
According to the embassy, there are indications of possible attacks not only on the island of Koh Phangan, but also at other music festivals and events with many foreign guests in Thailand. Tourists are advised to avoid such events at present.
Increased security precautions
The security authorities in Surat Thani province have described security on Koh Phangan as guaranteed and dismissed reports of possible terrorist attacks on Israelis as unfounded. Nevertheless, security measures have been stepped up to ensure the safety of visitors. Police chief Sermphong Sirikhong emphasized that police and other officials will closely monitor the event.
Israeli media reported a possible threat, citing internal Thai police documents. The Israeli authorities have called on their citizens to exercise caution. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office expressed concern about possible attacks on Israelis and Jews in Thailand.
Recently, violent attacks on Israeli football fans in Amsterdam caused worldwide horror and were condemned as anti-Semitic violence.
Since the late 1980s, the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan has been attracting more and more night owls. Up to 30,000 people regularly take part in this event, where people dance to electronic music under the full moon.
