According to the report, some of the troops had advanced seven kilometers further into Syrian territory. Among others, the villages of Swissa and Kussaiba in Syria were mentioned.
The Israeli army said on request that its forces were "deployed in southern Syria, within the buffer zone and at strategic points". The aim is to protect the inhabitants of the Israeli north. In order to guarantee the safety of the troops, the exact locations will not be named.
Following the uprising in the neighboring country, Israel's army entered the buffer zone to Syria on the Golan Heights and is apparently considering longer-term control of the area. The soldiers advanced into an area that is under UN supervision in accordance with the 1974 ceasefire agreement. The area on this side of the ceasefire line was conquered by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War and unilaterally annexed in 1981.
