Over the course of the day, there were twelve rescue operations with 107 rescued people along the coast of northern France, explained the French coastal authority Prémar.
Among them was one boat with engine problems. The English Channel is "a particularly dangerous area, especially in the middle of winter for unsafe and overloaded boats", the authority continued.
According to the authorities, at least 73 migrants have died this year while attempting to cross the English Channel. This makes 2024 the year with the most fatalities since records began. Meanwhile, tens of thousands have reached the UK, where the government in London has declared war on smuggling rings.
