According to the United Nations, more humanitarian aid workers have been killed this year than ever before as a result of the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

According to the UN emergency aid office OCHA, 281 people have been killed worldwide since January. Most of them were local employees of non-governmental organizations, UN institutions and the Red Cross. In 2023 as a whole, there were 280 victims.

The figures come from a database dating back to the 1990s. According to the database, 178 humanitarian aid workers were killed in Palestinian territories this year. According to OCHA, aid operations are currently also particularly dangerous in Afghanistan, Yemen, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and South Sudan.

UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher called on states to prosecute those responsible for the deaths. Such violence is unforgivable and has a devastating impact on aid operations, he said. "Humanitarian workers are being killed on an unprecedented scale. Their courage and humanity are being met with bullets and bombs," said Fletcher.
