"We should not forget the people. They are suffering," said the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, at a press conference in Kiev. The aim is to continue to give hope to Ukrainian refugees even after almost three years of war.

Grandi had previously visited regions close to the front and areas on the Russian border and held talks with Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.

A UN plan presented for 2025 provides aid for six million people in Ukraine. This includes food, medical care, shelter, cash and other measures. This applies in particular to vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and people with disabilities. In addition, more than two million refugees in eleven host countries are to be given access to housing, decent work and healthcare.

Millions of people received help

In 2024, the United Nations Refugee Agency provided three million people in Ukraine with food. Around 5.8 million were helped with water, sanitation and hygiene supplies, particularly in areas close to the front line. A further two million people were given access to medical services and around one million refugees were provided with accommodation, education and cash assistance.

The Russian army invaded Ukraine almost three years ago. According to UN statistics, 6.8 million Ukrainian refugees are registered outside the country.
