The Ukrainian armed forces have too few soldiers, according to their commander-in-chief Olexander Syrskyj. "We need to increase the number of our mechanized brigades appropriately," he said on the radio. "But the mobilization capacity is unfortunately not sufficient to cover this need."

That is why we have started to comb out the rear services. "Within reasonable limits", personnel are now being withdrawn from logistics, supply and maintenance in order to fill gaps and set up new units.

Syrskyj's statement was prompted by complaints from air force units about demands that highly qualified personnel should be withdrawn from there in order to be deployed on the fronts. The army leadership had put a stop to these efforts, said Syrskyj. These are experienced specialists "who cannot be replaced by anyone".

Ukraine is suffering from a lack of personnel for the frontline troops, partly due to the age limit for reservists. Although all men must complete basic military service from the age of 18, soldiers only have to go into combat from the age of 25. Ukraine's supporters have repeatedly called on Kiev to lower this age limit.
