On behalf of Child Protection Switzerland, the University of Fribourg surveyed 1264 parents on the use of psychological violence in parenting.
Children who suffer from regular psychological violence have a greatly increased risk of depression, learning disorders, aggressive and violent behavior or attachment disorders, the child protection agency announced on Monday.
Psychological violence is when parents deliberately exert power and influence and display certain behaviors that do not match the child's behavior and the situation, it added. The child perceives the reaction as a personal attack and feels rejected, worthless and at the mercy of others.
In addition to the "There is always an alternative to violence" campaign, the anchoring of non-violent parenting in the Swiss Civil Code (ZGB) is also imminent, it added. The National Council is expected to vote on the Federal Council's proposal in the 2025 spring session before the matter goes to the Council of States. The Federal Council recognizes that in addition to physical violence, psychological violence must also have no place in parenting.
