A pick-up truck has driven into a crowd of people during US National Day celebrations in New York, killing at least two people. At least seven other people were injured, police said late on Thursday evening (local time). The incident took place in Corlears Hook Park in the south of Manhattan, where hundreds of people were celebrating the US national holiday that evening.

The driver of the pick-up may have been under the influence of alcohol, the police said. There were initially no indications of a terrorist background. One person was arrested at the scene of the accident, reported the "New York Times", citing a police spokesperson. The investigation is ongoing.
