The Kremlin sees the alleged release of US missiles for Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory as involvement of Western states in the war. "If such a decision has actually been formulated and communicated to the Kiev regime, it has the quality of a new twist in the escalation spiral," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in Moscow.

It is also a "qualitatively new situation with regard to the involvement of the USA in the conflict", he told the state news agency Tass.

According to US media reports, outgoing President Joe Biden has allowed Ukraine to deploy tactical ATACMS missiles with a range of several hundred kilometers against targets in Russia for the first time.

This is primarily intended to help defend against the counter-offensive by Russian and possibly North Korean troops against the Ukrainian bridgehead in the Kursk region.

Peskov made it clear that the Kremlin did not yet know any more about this than the US media had reported. He repeated what President Vladimir Putin had previously claimed about the use of such weapons.

"These strikes are not being carried out by Ukraine," said Peskov. "These strikes are carried out by the states that give permission, because the target programming and other supplies are not carried out by Ukrainian military personnel, but by specialists from these Western countries."
