Singh, who was Prime Minister of today's most populous country from 2004 to 2014, is regarded as the architect of India's economic opening. As former finance minister, he ended the country's economic isolation in 1991.

The ex-prime minister was taken to the emergency room on Thursday evening (local time) after he lost consciousness at home, according to a statement from the AIIMS hospital in New Delhi. He was then pronounced dead at the hospital. He was being treated for age-related illnesses.
