Representatives of the healthcare system in Switzerland have set themselves the ambitious target of saving around CHF 300 million a year from 2026. This sum corresponds to around one percent of premium money, as Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider announced after a meeting in Bern. The round table at which this decision was made is to take place twice a year in future in order to strengthen cooperation and responsibility among all those involved.
Baume-Schneider emphasized that this is not about a revolution, but about targeted improvements to the system. One focus is on eliminating duplication without compromising the quality of care. The Minister of Health made it clear that she was prepared to intervene if no agreement could be reached. In such cases, she would either make decisions herself or submit corresponding proposals to the Federal Council.
Shared responsibility and future meetings
Baume-Schneider emphasized the importance of bringing all stakeholders together at one table. The regular meetings are intended to ensure that all those involved assume joint responsibility and work towards implementing the savings targets. The Minister emphasized that the quality of healthcare must be maintained despite the savings.
Concrete measures and possible interventions
If no agreement is reached, Baume-Schneider has made it clear that she is prepared to take action. This could be done either through her own decisions or through applications to the Federal Council. The Minister emphasized that cooperation between all stakeholders is crucial in order to achieve the goals set and make the healthcare system more efficient.
