The German government has described an election campaign by the right-wing populist AfD with a "deportation ticket" as tasteless.

When asked by journalists in Berlin, government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit pointed out that the government is holding back on assessments during the current election campaign. In this case, however, he refrained from saying "that something like this is of course in bad taste".

Everything else would have to be handled by the security authorities or law enforcement agencies. "It's up to everyone to be publicly outraged by this, I advise you to do so," he added.

Investigation on suspicion of incitement to hatred

The police are investigating on suspicion of incitement to hatred. The reason was a tip-off that a "deportation ticket" had been posted on social media, they said. The flyers, which look like airline tickets, are aimed at "illegal immigrants".

The departure date is dated the day of the federal election on February 23 for the trip: "From: Germany - To: Safe country of origin". A spokesperson for the AfD state association in Baden-Württemberg stated on request that this was an election campaign by the Karlsruhe district association.

The Karlsruhe AfD member of parliament and deputy AfD state chairman Marc Bernhard referred to the campaign on his social media channels.

The campaign flyer is currently being distributed in Karlsruhe as widely as possible and without any special requirements or restrictions, the Karlsruhe district association writes on its homepage. According to Die Linke, the flyers were placed in the letterboxes of people with a migration background.
