Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi thanked the United Arab Emirates for mediating the exchange. The aim is still to bring all the prisoners home, Selenskyj announced on the X platform. Many of the returnees had serious injuries and illnesses and were now receiving medical treatment.
The Russian Ministry of Defense had previously announced the exchange, but only mentioned 25 prisoners of war - not civilians. According to the announcement, the exchange took place on the border with Belarus.
Ukraine has been resisting the Russian invasion for almost three years.
