Political parties GLP says yes once and no once to rental law proposals

The Green Liberals want to make it easier for landlords to apply for personal use. On Saturday, they voted in favor of the corresponding bill. However, the party rejects stricter rules on subletting.

At their meeting in Rüschlikon ZH, the party delegates voted in favor of the amendment to the law on owner-occupancy by 116 votes to 43 with three abstentions, as the GLP announced. According to the amendment, in future it should be sufficient for landlords to claim "significant and current" personal use in order to be able to use rooms themselves. Under current law, they have to prove "urgent" personal use.

The amendments will create more fairness for landlords, said Aargau National Councillor Beat Flach in the communiqué. This is a necessary modernization of tenancy law.

Subletting sufficiently regulated

In contrast, the GLP said no to tightening the rules on subletting. The delegates reached their decision by 139 votes to 22 with two abstentions. A clear majority considered the existing rules to be sufficient and feared more bureaucracy as a result of the new regulations.

Voters will decide on both amendments to the Code of Obligations on November 24. The GLP had already adopted its slogans on the two other proposals on the upcoming voting Sunday in August. It rejects the highway expansion and supports the Efas proposal for uniform financing in the healthcare system.

The GLP delegates also celebrated the 20th anniversary of their Zurich cantonal section at the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute. This was founded in 2004 as the first ever cantonal party of the Green Liberals.

Focus on Europe and energy policy

The conviction that a flourishing economy and a healthy environment belonged together paved the way for the national party at the time, as Martin Bäumle, a member of the Zurich National Council, was quoted in the press release. He is one of the co-founders of the party and was president of the GLP Switzerland until 2017.

Bäumle's successor Jürg Grossen had already emphasized in his opening speech that the unique selling points of the Green Liberals were still there. The GLP is the only party that is 100% behind a new agreement with the EU.

According to the Bernese National Councillor, there is also no way around the GLP when it comes to energy policy: "We are the ones who are 100% in favor of the energy transition - without dreaming of new nuclear power plants or shaking up the hydropower compromise again."
