In the canton of Geneva, the training of primary school teachers is not to be shortened from four to three years. After 95% of the votes were counted, the reduction to three years was rejected on Sunday with around 61% of the votes.

The amendment to the law on public education passed by the right-wing majority in the Grand Council was aimed at training more students in Geneva and enabling them to enter the job market more quickly.

The left and the teachers' unions had launched a referendum against the legislative reform. They had warned that the teaching profession, which is 80% female, could restrict mobility opportunities and lead to lower wages due to less comprehensive basic training. This criticism was shared by the Mouvement Citoyens Genevois (MCG) and the Center, which also called for the reform to be rejected.
