After a week of intensive negotiations in Qatar on a ceasefire in the Gaza war, Israel is bringing back its negotiators. According to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, there will be internal consultations on the continuation of negotiations for the release of the hostages held in the Gaza Strip.

There had recently been reports of progress in the indirect talks between Israel and the Islamist Hamas, raising hopes of an imminent breakthrough. High-ranking representatives of the armed forces and the Mossad intelligence service, among others, traveled to Qatar on behalf of Israel for the latest round of negotiations.

The USA, Egypt and Qatar are mediating between Israel and Hamas. The aim is a ceasefire and the release of hostages still being held in the Gaza Strip in return for Palestinian prisoners. According to Israeli information, there are still around 100 hostages in the Gaza Strip. However, many of them are probably no longer alive.

The Gaza war was triggered by the Hamas massacre on October 7 last year with around 1,200 dead and 250 abducted. Israel therefore wants to destroy Hamas. According to Palestinian figures, more than 45,300 people have since been killed in the sealed-off coastal strip with a population of more than two million.
