  • After Joe Biden's weak performance in the first TV duel of the election year with Donald Trump, the president is defending himself against doubts about his presidential candidacy.
  • "I can do this job," said the 81-year-old Democrat on Friday during a campaign appearance in Raleigh, North Carolina.
  • In his 18-minute speech, Biden appeared far more animated than during the debate the previous evening.

"I wouldn't be running again if I didn't believe with all my heart and soul that I can do this job," the 81-year-old Democrat said at a campaign appearance in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Friday. "I know I'm not a young man, to state the obvious." He may not walk, talk and debate as well as he used to, the Democrat continued. "But I know how to tell the truth."

In his 18-minute speech, Biden repeatedly appeared far more animated than during the debate the previous evening. He accused Trump of lying and declared that the ex-president was out for revenge and retribution. "The choice in this election is simple," Biden said. "Donald Trump will destroy our democracy. I will defend it."

Biden sought on Friday to allay fears in his Democratic Party ranks over his uncertain demeanor in the debate with Trump. Biden's halting speech, particularly at the start of the debate, fueled concerns that at 81, he may not be up to the task of leading the country for another four years.
