The struggling Borussia Dortmund has reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League. After a 1:1 draw in the first leg, the team led by national team goalkeeper Gregor Kobel won 2:1 in Lille.

The team in tenth place in the Bundesliga shook off their league frustration in the top flight and played one of their best games of the season in northern France. They were not even fazed by going behind early on.

Despite numerous top-class chances, Niko Kovac's team failed to score in the first half. After the break, however, the superior Germans were rewarded for their efforts. First, captain Emre Can scored from the spot (54') after a foul penalty was harshly whistled by Swiss referee Sandro Schärer, then Maximilian Beier scored under the crossbar (65').

Dortmund then defended their lead skillfully. Only once did the visitors really get into trouble. Kobel made up for the mistake he had made when going behind early on, making a strong save from goalscorer Jonathan David.

BVB will face FC Barcelona in the quarter-finals. Last year's finalists lost 3-2 to the Catalans in the league phase.
