Top favorite Jonas Vingegaard shows an unexpected weakness on the 4th stage of Paris-Nice. The Dane is caught just a few meters before the finish at the mountain top finish in La Loge des Gardes.
The stage win went to the Portuguese rider João Almeida. In the overall standings, however, two-time Tour de France winner Vingegaard took the lead with a five-second advantage over his team-mate Matteo Jorgensen from the USA. Third is the Dane Mattias Skjelmose.
Mauro Schmid remains the best Swiss, even though he lost 36 places and is now in 43rd place. The 25-year-old from Zurich lost almost eight minutes to the winner Almeida on the 163.4 km stage.
The weather had caused chaos on the ride to La Loge des Gardes. Around 44 kilometers before the finish, the peloton was stopped by the jury due to snowfall and hail. The riders were able to dress warmly and the race was only reopened 16 kilometers later. Earlier, the Colombian Santiago Buitrago, one of the co-favorites, had crashed on a wet road and had to abandon the race.
