The first finalist at the WTA Finals in Riyadh has been decided. Zheng Qinwen from China beat Barbora Krejcikova from the Czech Republic 6:3, 7:5.
The 22-year-old is thus playing for the title in her first participation in the tournament for the best eight players of the year. It is the crowning glory of a season in which Zheng reached her first Grand Slam final (Australian Open) and became Olympic champion in Paris. Her opponent will be determined in a duel between the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka and the American Coco Gauff.
Zheng is only the second Chinese woman to reach the final of the WTA Finals. Before her, only Li Na had achieved this. She lost 2-1 to Serena Williams in 2013.
