The Swiss handball team finishes the 51st Yellow Cup in Winterthur in 2nd place. Coach Andy Schmid's team defeated the tournament winners, the Netherlands, 34:33.
To win the traditional tournament for the fourth time in a row and for the tenth time overall, the Swiss would have had to beat the favored Dutch by four goals to one. This was because they lost 29:31 to Italy in the first game, while the Dutch won 31:26 against the southern Europeans.
Things looked good at first under the watchful eye of four-time Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel. The locals got off to a very determined start and impressed both up front and at the back. They scored 14 goals in the first 20 attacks. The reward was a 14:9 lead after 21 minutes. However, mistakes then crept in, which the Dutch punished. The score was 16:16 at the break.
In the 35th minute, the visitors were 18:17 ahead for the first time in the game. However, the Swiss did not let up - the maximum lead of the Dutch was two goals. In the 50th minute, the SHV team took the lead again at 27:26. After that, neither team managed to open up a gap of more than one goal. Lukas Maros scored the decisive 34:33 with 42 seconds remaining.
Thanks to the victory against last year's European Championship 12th-placed team, the Swiss will travel to the World Championship, which takes place in Croatia, Denmark and Norway, with a positive feeling. Their opponents in the preliminary round in Herning are the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland.
