The Swiss start the season with a defeat. In the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, they lost to hosts Finland 2:3 after overtime after leading 2:0.
Last season, the Swiss lost their first eleven games in the Euro Hockey Tour before celebrating a victory against the Czech Republic at the end. Fischer's goal for this season is to even out the results. The momentum of the World Championship silver medal should be carried over.
It looked like Switzerland would win for a long time, but the visitors squandered a 2-0 lead in the final period, with Robin Salo scoring the decisive goal after 71 seconds of overtime.
The 2:0 at the second break was not undeserved. Although the Swiss struggled a little in the first 20 minutes, they put their stamp on the middle period. The 1:0 (28') was scored by a debutant. Giancarlo Chanton, a 21-year-old defender from Genève-Servette, brought the puck from the side in front of the goal line, where Ahti Oksanen deflected it into his own goal. Fabrice Herzog (38') was also lucky to make it 2:0. The Zug striker first missed the post, whereupon the puck rebounded via the Plexiglas in front of the goal and Herzog scored on his second attempt.
Although the Swiss also had good scenes in the final period, the fact that it was still not enough to win was down to two players from the National League. First, ZSC defenseman Mikko Lehtonen reduced the deficit to 1:2 (46'), then Harri Pesonen of the SCL Tigers equalized in the 55th minute. The new Finnish coach Antti Pennanen used nine players from the Swiss league.
Despite the defeat, the Swiss can take some positives from the game. In addition to Chanton, 22-year-old Theo Rochette was another talented player who underlined his potential, and 24-year-old goalie Stéphane Charlin proved that the team will not have to worry about this position in the future.
Sweden are the Swiss' next opponents on Saturday. They have lost all of their last 16 matches against the Scandinavians. The last victory dates back to April 7, 2016 (5:3).
