The Swiss biathletes fail to make an exploit in the unpredictable sprint at the World Cup in Oberhof. France's Paula Botet takes advantage of the difficult conditions to take her first World Cup victory.

Amy Baserga, who was forced to withdraw from the race in Annecy-Le Grand Bornand before the turn of the year due to a flu-like infection, managed one miss in adverse conditions with wind and pouring rain and was the best Swiss athlete in twentieth place. Aita Gasparin (27th) missed twice, Lena Häcki-Gross (29th) and Elisa Gasparin (50th) three times.

While Franziska Preuss, the overall World Cup leader, had to settle for 28th place in front of her home crowd after six podium finishes in a row, Paula Botet celebrated her first World Cup victory. The 24-year-old Frenchwoman, who started the race with a best result of 21st place, made no mistakes and triumphed with a lead of just over half a minute. Norway's Maren Kirkeeide and Bulgaria's Milena Todorova completed the unexpected podium.

The biathletes continue on Saturday with the 10-kilometre pursuit race.
