Colapinto will initially be a test driver and one of the reserve drivers from the coming season. However, it is also clear that the 21-year-old's commitment will increase the pressure on newcomer Jack Doohan.

Doohan, an Australian of the same age, will replace Frenchman Esteban Ocon, who has moved to Haas, at Alpine. He was given preference over Mick Schumacher after a qualifying process. Ocon's compatriot Pierre Gasly is set to take the other cockpit.

Colapinto made his Formula 1 debut with Williams last season and immediately attracted fans from Argentina to the circuits. He showed flashes of his ability in nine Grand Prix races, but also caused costly accidents. According to the press release, his contract with Alpine is valid for several years.
