After finishing third in the downhill, Lara Gut-Behrami also impresses in the super-G at the speed season opener in Beaver Creek. However, the Ticino native is almost half a second behind the Italian Sofia Goggia, who won the World Cup for the 25th time.

Goggia was in a league of her own on the "Birds of Prey". The 32-year-old from Bergamo was 0.48 seconds and more ahead of her rivals. Just like the day before in the downhill, where she finished second behind Cornelia Hütter, Goggia was in no way aware that she was making her comeback this weekend.

Just over ten months ago, she had suffered a fracture to her right tibia and shin bone during giant slalom training. She missed the start of the giant slalom season, but in recent weeks Goggia has invested a lot of time in speed training in Copper Mountain and has regained her form in time to be able to attack in her familiar style and without compromise, as she did before the injury.

Gut-Behrami back in top form

Lara Gut-Behrami had also not yet shone in the speed disciplines this season before the opening weekend. But the 33-year-old's 3rd and 2nd places in Beaver Creek show that she will be a force to be reckoned with in the battle for the crystal globes this winter too. Gut-Behrami did not make any mistakes in either the downhill on Saturday or the super-G the following day.

Third place went to the surprising Austrian Ariane Rädler, who only lost seven hundredths to Gut-Behrami. Rädler's compatriot Cornelia Hütter, who had won the downhill the day before in Colorado ahead of Goggia and Gut-Behrami, followed in fourth place. Michelle Gisin - eighth in the downhill on Saturday - was the second-best Swiss racer in the first super-G of the season in 9th place.

Suter takes the next step

Corinne Suter was also on course for at least a top 10 result for a long time. At the last intermediate time, she passed with exactly the same time as Gut-Behrami. However, while the skier from Ticino made it into the top 3 with the best time in the last sector, Suter lost a lot of time to the best skiers right up to the finish. In the end, she finished 1.6 seconds behind Goggia in 19th place. It was the next step back, but she still needs to regain more confidence, said Suter, for whom it was only her second race since suffering a serious knee injury in Cortina at the end of January.

The next races in the Women's World Cup are coming up in Switzerland. Two more Super-Gs will take place next weekend in St. Moritz.
