Swiss slalom specialist Reto Schmidiger is ending his career with immediate effect. The 32-year-old from Nidwalden announced his retirement from ski racing on Instagram.
Schmidiger's career got off to a promising start with three gold medals at the Junior World Championships in 2010 and 2011 (two in slalom, one in combined). He was denied similar success in the World Cup with just three top 10 finishes in 93 starts. His best result is 8th place in the 2011 slalom in Lenzerheide.
Schmidiger was repeatedly set back by injuries. When he lost his Swiss-Ski squad status in spring 2022, the three-time Swiss champion continued at his own expense. After a victory in the European Cup, his fifth overall, he made his return to the World Cup a year ago, but failed to achieve any tangible results in five starts. Now he is drawing a line under his career.
Schmidiger was interviewed by blue Sport last season:
"While preparing for the European Cup classics in Pozza di Fassa and Obereggen, I definitely felt that my priorities and thoughts were no longer with racing to the usual extent," Schmidiger writes on Instagram.
