On Sunday, January 5, the best Swiss athletes of the year will be honored at the Sports Awards in Zurich. The six finalists have now been announced.
Unsurprisingly, last year's winners Lara Gut-Behrami and Marco Odermatt have also made it onto the shortlist. With their victory in the overall World Cup, the two ski cracks once again have strong arguments to assert themselves against the highly decorated competition.
In the women's competition, Lara Gut-Behrami will be challenged by triathlete Julie Derron, freestyle dominator Mathilde Gremaud, Olympic shooting champion Chiara Leone and European athletics champions Mujinga Kambundji and Angelica Moser.
In the men's competition, Marco Odermatt, who has won the Sportsman of the Year award three times in a row, will compete against show jumper Steve Guerdat, the two track and field athletes Simon Ehammer and Dominic Lobalu as well as a duo from the world of swimming, Roman Mityukov and Noè Ponti.
TV audience has a say
The awards are traditionally presented at a TV gala in the studios of Swiss Radio and Television in Zurich. During the broadcast (from 20.05 on SRF 1, RTS 2 and RSI LA 2), viewers can help decide the winners by televoting. The six nominees were pre-selected by top Swiss athletes and the sports media.
Athletes who have delivered outstanding performances in the election period between November 1, 2023 and October 31, 2024 were selected. The results of the preselections (media and top athletes) count for two thirds, those of the televoting for one third.
Four further awards plus young talent award
In the live broadcast hosted by Fabienne Gyr and Rainer-Maria Salzgeber, the winners in the categories "Team", "Paralympic Athlete", "Coach" and "MVP" will also be honored. In addition, the greatest young Swiss talent will be honored as "SRF 3 Best Talent Sport".
