The national ice hockey and football teams and the beach volleyball duo Tanja Hüberli/Nina Brunner are on the shortlist for Swiss Team of the Year 2024 at the Sports Awards on January 5.
One of the three nominated teams will follow in the footsteps of the women's tennis team, who received the award for "Team of the Year 2023". All three nominees have delivered outstanding performances in the period between November 1, 2023 and October 31, 2024. The footballers advanced to the European Championship quarter-finals, the beach volleyball players Tanja Hüberli/Nina Brunner won the Olympic bronze medal and the ice hockey players made it to the World Cup final.
The nominees for the "Coach" and "Paralympic Athlete of the Year" awards have also been announced. The coaches up for selection are Christoph Dieckmann (beach volleyball), Patrick Fischer (ice hockey) and Helmut Krug (alpine skiing). Among the Paralympic athletes, the wheelchair athletes Catherine Debrunner and Marcel Hug and the para-cyclist Flurina Rigling will make the choice among themselves.
The six contenders for the MVP of the Year trophy from the team sports have already been known for two weeks. They are Kevin Fiala and Alina Müller (both ice hockey), Granit Xhaka and Lia Wälti (both football), Lara Heini (floorball) and Manuel Zehnder (handball). Swiss sports fans have until December 17 to vote for their favorites in this category at www.sports-awards.ch.
The winner of this MVP award, as well as the other award winners from the other categories, will not be honored until after the turn of the year. The TV gala will take place on Sunday, January 5 (live on SRF 1 from 20:05) in the studios of Swiss Radio and Television in Zurich. The nominations in the main categories "Sportswoman of the Year" and "Sportsman of the Year" are still open.
