The European Championship, which began in Basel, Switzerland, ended with a record-breaking Norwegian victory. The Norwegians, who beat the Swiss team 40:24 at the end of the main round, won the title for the tenth time.

The Danes led by as many as two points in the first half. After the break, however, the favorites from Norway, who needed almost eight minutes to score their first goal, clearly pulled away. The Norwegians had already beaten the Danes 27:24 during the group phase.

Norway's Icelandic head coach Thorir Hergeirsson achieved the perfect end to the tournament by winning his third title in a row. Hergeirsson is retiring after 23 years on the team staff and 15 years as head coach. The 44-year-old Norwegian goalkeeper won gold for the seventh time.

Hungary had previously secured bronze with a 25:24 victory over France.
