HC Lugano celebrates an eminently important victory in the basement duel at home against Genève-Servette. Thanks to a 5:2 win, the Ticino side reduced the gap to their neighbors in the table to two points.

It was a crucial game for Lugano, as a defeat would have widened the gap to the equally struggling Geneva team to eight points. However, the Bianconeri remain in touch with the competition and with a place in the play-in.

Lugano secured the win in the middle third with three goals in just over five minutes. Santeri Alatalo, Stéphane Patry and captain Calvin Thürkauf turned a 0:1 into a 3:1 between the 35th and 40th minutes, with the first and third goals coming in overtime.

Servette also scored twice on the powerplay. Vincent Praplan (12th) opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a face-off goal. In the final period, Tim Berni reduced the deficit to 2:3 after a solo advance, but Jesper Peltonen (48) and Radim Zohorna (57) then made it clear with their goals.

It was the second win in the third game for new Lugano coach Uwe Krupp. The Ticino team will play another home game against Kloten on Saturday. Servette, which has the worse points average under new coach duo Yorick Treille/Rikard Franzén than under Jan Cadieux, who left the team before the turn of the year, will host EV Zug on Saturday, unbeaten in six games.
