Following Switzerland's defeat against hosts Denmark, Germany has also reached the quarter-finals of the World Handball Championship.
The Olympic silver medallists won the key game against Italy 34:27 in the Swiss main round group, with both teams having four points between them.
Goalkeeper Wolff strong again
The Italians trailed 13:15 at half-time, although they had kept up well until then. They even led 7:4 in the 12th minute, but after the break the favorites pulled away from 16:14 (32') to 20:14 (39'). The surprise team of the tournament did manage to close the gap to 17:20 (43'). But then the DHB team pulled away to 25:18 (49'), which was the preliminary decision.
The Germans were once again able to rely on goalkeeper Andreas Wolff. With 18 saves, he recorded a save rate of 43 percent and was named man of the match.

France also reached the quarter-finals as winners of their main round group. The European champions defeated the Netherlands 35:28 and maintained their unbeaten record at the tournament. Dika Mem and Melvyn Richardson each contributed seven goals to France's victory. The latter achieved a success rate of 100 percent.
