Andrin Gulich and Roman Röösli win the bronze medal in the double sculls at the Olympic rowing regattas.

The week, which had started so soberingly for this boat, thus ended in a frenzy of joy. Gulich/Röösli missed out on direct qualification for the semi-finals in the preliminary heat, came back with a victory in the hope heat and then rowed to second place in the semi-final and third place in the final. Only Croatia and Great Britain finished ahead of the two Swiss.

For 30-year-old Roman Röösli from Lucerne, Olympic bronze is the crowning glory of his career. Röösli was world and European champion. He won World Championship gold a year ago in Belgrade in the coxless pair with Andrin Gulich. In his third Olympic participation in three different boat classes, Röösli finally managed to win a medal after finishing 7th (Rio) and 5th (Tokyo).

The title went to the Croatians Martin and Valent Sinkovic. The Sinkovics won for the third time in a row at the Olympics. They have also won six World Championship gold medals in various boat classes. The Croatians caught the British, who had dominated the race in the first 1500 m, in the finish. Gulich and Röösli were unable to keep up with these two boats in terms of strength this time. The last time Gulich/Röösli beat the British was a year ago at the World Championships. The Swiss won against Olympic champions Croatia a month ago in Poznan, Poland.
