It's a duel between two teams that have been playing below their own expectations in the National League so far this season. When Biel and Lugano, 11th and 13th in the table, face each other in their 34th appearance this season, people are not jumping for joy either in Seeland or in Sottoceneri.
In this respect, it was hardly surprising that the 5,000 fans in the Biel Arena on Tuesday did not see a game that could hardly have resisted a multitude of chances. The Ticino side, who have an even record of one win and one defeat so far this year, made a more committed start to the encounter. However, the HCL never really put Harri Säteri under pressure in the Biel goal.
Instead, it was his counterpart Niklas Schlegel who had to reach behind him for the first time before half-time. Anthony Greco caught the Lugano goalie with a hard finish in the near corner. It was the American's second goal of the season. And for Biel to secure their first win of the calendar year, they had to rely on a player who also scored a personal goal for the second time this season.
Robin Grossmann scored two minutes before the end, with Schlegel again getting caught by a hard shot from distance. Luca Fazzini's 16th goal of the season, which had restored Lugano's hopes of winning a point at the start of the third period, thus became a side note.
