16-year-old Spaniard Lamine Yamal has become the youngest scorer at a European Championship with his 1:1 goal against France. He thus erases the Swiss Johan Vonlanthen from the record books.

At the 2004 European Championship in Portugal, Johan Vonlanthen scored the only Swiss goal of that final round in a 3-1 defeat against France - at the age of 18 years and 141 days. No one has been younger than the Colombian-born player before or since. Until July 9, 2024.

In the semi-final against France, Lamine Yamal scored the equalizer after 21 minutes - at the age of 16 years and 362 days. Yamal will turn 17 next Saturday, one day before the final in Berlin.

In the first group game against Croatia, the FC Barcelona winger became the youngest player to score at a European Championship final, and now he also holds the record for the youngest goalscorer. Yamal has already scored three goals in the five European Championship games so far.

Memories of Pelé

Yamal made his debut for Barcelona in the Spanish first division at the age of 15 and became the youngest debutant and goalscorer in the Spanish national team last year in the 7-1 win over Georgia at the age of 16 and 57 days. His contract at Barcelona runs until 2026 and the buy-out clause is said to be one billion euros.

On Tuesday, Yamal also became the youngest player to have played in a European Championship or World Cup semi-final. Pelé was 17 years and 244 days old at the 1958 World Cup. Until Yamal's goal, Brazil's legend was also the youngest scorer at World Cup and European Championship finals (17 years, 239 days).
