Jonas Omlin's complicated injury "My shoulder has dislocated four times in three months"
Jonas Omlin missed almost the entire season due to injury - and was not called up for the European Championships. Also because the national team has so many good goalkeepers - Switzerland's luck is Omlin's misfortune.
No time? blue News summarizes for you
- Jonas Omlin played just eight games for Borussia Mönchengladbach last season due to injury.
- He was not called up for the European Championship in Germany by national team coach Murat Yakin.
- The competition in the Swiss goal is huge with Yann Sommer and Gregor Kobel. Omlin says: "My bad luck - or Switzerland's good luck - is that we simply have a lot of extremely good goalkeepers."
It has been a difficult season for Jonas Omlin. The Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper was able to play the first two Bundesliga games and was then ruled out until March 2024 due to a shoulder injury.
In the Nati home game broadcast on blue Sport, the goalkeeper revealed: "My shoulder has dislocated three or four times in three months. We thought for a long time that maybe it would work anyway and then the last time we had to say: 'I'm no longer cut out for goalkeeper-specific work'. That's why I took the risk of operating on my shoulder."
The operation was a success, and Omlin was able to play the last few games of the Bundesliga season again: "I feel very good and can do everything again." The shoulder has been fixed - almost set in concrete - and is now holding, according to Omlin.
Switzerland's luck is Omlin's bad luck
But even without the injury, Omlin would not have been able to play at the European Championships. After all, the numbers 1 and 2 are clearly assigned to Yann Sommer and Gregor Kobel.
Four-time international Omlin says: "My bad luck - or Switzerland's good luck - is that we simply have an extremely large number of good goalkeepers. That's why it's difficult to become number 1. My focus is on Gladbach, I have to perform well there and continue to play consistently. Then I'll be a topic for the national team again."
Where he will then be ranked in the national team is another matter, says the 30-year-old. "But I'll play for as long as I enjoy it and, of course, I'm also a candidate for the national team goal."
